Our School

Brookside School opened in 1969 to serve the surrounding neighbourhood tucked between the Whitemud Freeway and Whitemud Creek. It's a quiet residential area with no major streets and no stores. The school sits on the edge of a large park and playing field, offering tremendous opportunities for outdoor play - whether on the playground, field, or toboggan hill.

Brookside has a state-of-the-art studio for broadcasting announcements and school produced videos over closed circuit TV.

Brookside is well-equipped with a spacious gym and stage, exceptional music room, a newly renovated library (2006), and a state-of-the-art computer lab. It is staffed by thirteen dedicated and experienced teachers, two office personnel, a custodian, a custodial assistant and the principal. Enrolment is now at 321 students (2006), with continued growth anticipated with the development of the Riverside,Terwillegar Towne and Terwillegar Gardens communities. This size fosters a real sense of family, where everyone knows and watches out for everyone else.

"Just walking in the front door of the school, there's a sense of warmth and familiarity. You know your kids are safe and well cared for. "

Our Approach to Education

Brookside believes in a balanced education with emphasis on the basics of language learning, social studies, math, and science. While high achievement is important, it is not narrowly defined by test scores. Children are challenged to fulfill their potential in all its dimensions: intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and cultural.

Each child's unique abilities are valued, and all children have opportunities to be in the limelight and to assume leadership roles - participating on student council, performing in musical or theatrical productions, or organizing special events.

Through the example of their enthusiastic teachers, children at Brookside learn how to think not what to think, and come away understanding that learning is a lifelong endeavour.

Progress Reports

Student progress reports are issued three times a year, November, March and June. During the November reporting period teachers meet with parents and children for conferences to discuss the child's progress. Following the March progress report, parents are invited to participate in a science fair/student-led conference that provides children with the opportunity to demonstrate what they have been learning in class. Individual conferences are held at either the request of the parent or teacher. At Brookside, we encourage open communication between home and school. Teachers are readily available to meet with the parents upon request.

Communication

Excellent two-way communication between school and parents is a hallmark of Brookside. A monthly newsletter keeps everyone informed about events at the school, and classroom newsletters focus on what's happening in specific grades. A detailed curriculum handbook is given to parents once a year in each grade. It thoroughly outlines the material to be covered and the expectations for student learning. Student achievement is detailed in written reports three times a year, with parent conferences in the fall and spring. The principal and teachers make themselves readily available for parents who have concerns. As well, all students from grades 1-6 make use of an agenda which enhances communication between home and school.

School assemblies are held occasionally. This time is used to generate an "extended family" atmosphere in the school. It serves as a time to celebrate accomplishments, to introduce special visitors, and to share information.

"The principal and teachers are really approachable - for parents and kids."

Receiving School

As well as serving the area of Brookside, Brookside School is designated as a "receiving school" for grade K-6 students who reside in surrounding areas who do not have a school in their home community. We are the receiving school for the South Riverside, Terwillegar Towne (North Side of Terwillegar Blvd north to 23 Ave) and Terwillegar Gardens areas. A yellow school bus brings students to Brookside each day.

Brookside School Council

The council consists of an executive of four parents, the principal, and one teacher, and is run in a town-hall format where any interested parents may attend and vote. As well as organizing fund-raising activities, the council affords parents and teachers a chance to examine areas of modern education - the role of technology, budget restraints, achievement results, for example - and to make decisions that will directly affect Brookside students. Parents are also encouraged to volunteer in the classroom, on field trips, in the library, and for a variety of special projects that arise throughout the year.

Lunch

Grades 1 to 6 can stay for lunch. The children eat in their classrooms, in a safe and quiet atmosphere. Paid supervisors monitor the use of microwaves and ensure students behave responsibly. Drop-ins to the lunch program are welcome for a small fee.

Extracurricular Activities

Opportunities for extracurricular activities vary from year to year. School newsletters and daily announcements will notify the community of these opportunities.

Parents support a well rounded program that brings theatre, dance, and music presentations to the school several times a year. The school council's regular hamburger and pizza days liven up the lunch hour and foster great school spirit.

Brookside Montessori Children's Centre

Brookside Montessori Children's Centre occupies two classrooms and provides a warm and lively environment for students outside regular school hours.
