Brookside recognizes the crucial role parents play in a child's education. After all, parents are a child's very first teacher. In addition, research shows that children whose parents are involved and take an active interest in school life do better at school. The school strongly encourages parental participation while understanding that many families lead busy lives.

Involvement can range from: parent volunteer
  • baking for the bake sales
  • "helping" with homework
  • asking about what went on at school
  • walking your child to school
  • attending school concerts and assemblies
  • helping coordinate a fundraising or family event
  • organizing a new club
  • speaking to a class on a special area of expertise
  • running events at the annual Track and Field Day
  • reading with your child
  • coming to student conferences to discuss your child's progress with the teacher
  • asking the teacher how you can help in the classroom (or perhaps at home - cutting and pasting, for instance)
  • attending School Council meetings (which are run on a town hall format in which every parent present has a vote)
  • giving a few hours a year to manage the book sales at the annual Scholastic book fair
  • helping with classroom field trips

The School communicates with parents through regular monthly newsletters, classroom newsletters, and a Parent's bulletins board. Parents are encouraged to phone the principal or the teacher with any concern or problem or word of praise. The sooner, the better!
