Our Current Area of Focus:
Brookside students, staff and parents will acquire 21st Century literacy skills with a focus on numeracy. The increased use of technology, manipulatives and everyday problem-solving, will enhance student engagement. Students will learn to communicate effectively, making connections across the curriculum.
What makes Brookside special?
Brookside's motto " A caring school creating the future " is the basic philosophy of all staff at Brookside. Our small school environment ensures that all staff know all students within the school.Staff are experienced and committed to working with students to reach their individual potential. All teachers have taught a variety of grades throughout the elementary program and are familiar with the full range of curriculum content and expectations.
A supportive group of parents work with the school to enhance their children's learning. Parent volunteers assist in the classrooms, library, during special events and co-curricular activities. Our school council is active in a variety of ways providing support and insight to staff as well as promoting advocacy for public education.
Our students demonstrate a positive attitude within the classroom, around the school and outside on the playground. Our school expectation that students demonstrate respect for themselves, others and property, is a school wide goal at which all our students strive to be successful .

-FSL (French as a Second Language - grades 4-6)
-Balanced Literacy (grades K-4)

Enhancing teacher knowledge and training
All staff view professional development as an ongoing aspect of the teaching profession. Staff develops a common school wide plan for professional development that is directly linked to our student achievement goals and Instructional Focus. This plan is long term and ongoing in nature. Each individual teacher develops a professional growth plan that ties directly to the school wide plan and incorporates individual interests and goals.
Like all schools in Alberta, Brookside students in Grade 3 and 6 participate in Alberta-wide exams each year. Brookside's excellent results are posted below. While Brookside already surpasses the expected 15% of kids achieving the standard of excellence, it tries to raise the level of excellence each year.

Highest Level of Achievement Tests (HLATs) - 2008/2009Edmonton Public Schools HLAT testing is done each spring in the area of language learning to provide feedback to individual schools about the growth of students in the area of reading and writing. The purpose of this testing is to provide teachers with information in areas that students are doing well in, as well as areas that need to be focused on. Brookside's Results:
